Talkin’ Dirt with Kathy – Farm Fresh

I suppose you know you have entered adulthood when the highlight of your summer is the opening of the Monroe Farmer’s Market! My love affair with the Farmer’s Market began in 1982 when I moved back to Monroe. At that time, the Farmer’s Market was located on the grounds of the Monroe Civic Center. I can remember bringing my 6 month old baby boy along with me to do my shopping and one of the farmer’s, Mr. Spillers, decided he needed to weigh my child. Without missing a beat, he plopped him on his hanging scale and declared the “young un” was tipping the scale at 16 pounds. It seems like just yesterday that this “weigh in” occurred but that young man is now 25 years old.  Continue reading

Community Pride

The community of Oak Ridge in Northeast Louisiana is fortunate to have it’s own private litter control. Mr. R. E. Barham, affectionately known as Mr. Rie, is 92 years old. Every morning he gets on his bicycle, puts a plastic bag in the basket, and patrols the town for any bits of trash that have appeared since the previous morning. Patiently and meticulously he picks up and disposes of the litter, also taking time to collect fallen limbs and sticks. Ever vigilant in his personal war on litter, Mr. Rie is a fixture in Oak Ridge and a shining example of community pride.

Groundbreaking Research

Realtor Barbara Thomas interviews Dr. Paul Sylvester about the innovative breast cancer research being done at the ULM College of Pharmacy in Monroe Louisiana. Sylvester is ULM’s Pfizer Endowed Professor of Pharmacology and Director of Graduate Studies and Research. He and his team of researchers are studying how tocotrienols — a rare form of vitamin E — can attack cancer cells in early stages without harming healthy cells. The team works towards creating a drug that can function as a cancer preventative in pill form, and a cancer treatment as well.

Making an Offer

Before you make an offer on a property, get some expert advice from the Realtors at John Rea Realty. The first thing a buyer should do is consult with a mortgage professional to find out what type of loan they qualify for and how much they can spend. Then you will know what price range you can afford and look at homes that fit your budget. Another plus to being pre-qualified is that it makes any offers to purchase more attractive to the seller. When it’s time to make an offer, your Realtor will take you through the process of writing a legally binding offer and explain the terminology, time lines that must be followed, and other aspects of a real estate purchase agreement. If there are multiple offers on the property you want to purchase, your Realtor will help you submit the most attractive offer possible. If you are considering buying a home in Monroe, West Monroe or surrounding areas of Northeast Louisiana, call the professional Realtors at John Rea Realty. 318-388-0941 or visit http://www.johnrearealty.com
